Check out this new concept table design from our own Industryindesign stable. The Tensa coffee table uses a mix of materials to suit any interior scheme and would be available in a choice of colours or finishes.Shown here with a sage green centre shelf unit and a tinted glass top with stainless scissor frame.

The central frame section uses the weight of the glass top to act as a scissor action to grab the central shelf section, creating a visual as well as actual tension to the piece. Not as yet in production more this table remains as a cad rendering for now. Eco design from further afield with the farmline chair............

Finnish designer Timo Hoisko has created the Farmline chair out of a single metal tube and locally-produced hemp fiber.

Designer talks....'I believe in sustainable development, and in the design our products we should promote nature-conserving renewable materials. I wanted to design an ecological chair using locally-produced hemp fiber, a rare material in the furniture industry that I believe would create new opportunities in furniture design.

Hemp fiber is an ecological material, as it is cultivated and processed locally at a near-by farm. This is carried in the name itself: ”Farmline”. Hemp fiber can be recycled thanks to its adhesive (PET), enabling us to reuse it for good instead of throwing it away: thus its life cycle does not end in the litter box, as all of its materials can be recycled and then re-introduced in production.

The body of the chair consists of only a single metal tube that runs in a threadlike fashion around the chair, forming three legs. The cuplike seat is attached to the body from the front and from the backrest, and the chair’s skeletal structure allows it to be stacked.'

Not sure how you recycle this chair?....do you crush it or maybe partake in it's content???

At this year’s SaloneSatellite show in Milan, Jessica Carnevale, who was exhibited her Stretch collection of seating, made with latex, bungee and rope.

American designer, Jessica Carnevale, studied industrial design at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 2003 she was selected for the European Honors Program to live and study in Rome for a year. Alongside her studies in Art History she worked in the design studio of WalzWork Inc. In any spare time she worked in the studio of a traditional upholsterer and woodworker. It was here that she built a collection of upholstered wooden furniture that was shown at the Palazzo Cenci. In May 2004 she graduated with honors from RISD winning the Excellent Student Award. A desk light made from hand-spun metal was shown in RISD’s Juried Senior Invitational Exhibition.

Martha Stewart then recruited her to design products and so Jessica moved to New York. Over the next four years, she designed for West Elm, Anna Sui and Alexandra Champalimaud before becoming head designer for Brocade Home, creating a new brand for Restoration Hardware.In 2007 she opened her studio in Brooklyn, where, in her spare time, she continued to develop furniture in both wood and metal, always exploring new materials and techniques.

For the past two years, Jessica has been working at the Marcel Wanders Studio in Amsterdam. Under his direction, she has designed a limited edition collection of crystal for Baccarat, a Christmas collection for Target, ceramic tiles for Bardelli, a Senseo machine for Philips and varied collections for Moooi. For Salone 2010, she has developed new items for Magis, Skitsch, XO and Cappellini. Altogether, over 100 items are currently in production.

Jessica’s approach to design is driven by the material – wherever she seeks inspiration, be it fashion or industry, she tries to combine materials in new and beautiful ways.Jessica is relocating to London in May 2010 to open a studio, where she will continue to produce unique furniture and products.

Reminds me of those string pictures everybody seemed to have in the seventies...not sure I want to be reminded though.

Japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka has designed 'memory' chair for italian company moroso.

'Memory' is a chair of unlimited forms. its design is completed through the alteration of its silhouette. for the project, Yoshioka developed a special fabric made with recycled aluminum,which he has used to create a chair that transforms and memorizes its shape upon use.

From the designer

'Based on a concept which I conceived several years ago, we spent more than one year conducting experiments and verifications by making more than 50 actual scale models with aluminum. also for the fabric, I searched the most appropriate fabric that can realize the initial concept image, and I finally came to develop a fabric with recycled aluminum. after repetition of trial and error, 'memory', a chair that transforms and memorizes its shape by the intention of users, was completed. 'memory' has 'a deliberate loose form'.(...) I believe that the chair could be called 'a chair without a design.' at the same time, this is a chair that has an unlimited variety of forms.' - TY

ONGO is a young German company, whose main product is a stool that they are promoting as both furniture and exercise equipment.

The ONGO Seat has a curved footprint and a built-in ball track at the base, which follows every movement of the seated occupant. The movement of the seat is transferred directly to the ball. Each position change creates an acoustic feedback through the rolling noise, which encourages movement to prevent tension, strengthen back muscles and improve posture.

At first sight the assembled Hug does not appear to be a flat-pack low chair. We have taken the best possible advantage of the strengths of formpressed techniques to create a sturdy low chair with flat-pack design principles when developing Hug. It is created out of a single formpressed sheet and requires no complex tools to assemble, just the buttons which function not only as decoration but most importantly; they hold the chair together.

Belgian designers James Van Vossel and Tom de Vrieze have formed a creative cooperation called Fox & Freeze. Their first product is the FF1 Chair.

Designer speak....

FF1 or Fox & Freeze1 is an indoor lounge chair made out of 1 square sheet of synthetic felt. There is no loss of material (except from the drilled holes), it is not supported with wood or metal or other. The Structure is self-supporting, the flax rope contracts the chair and finishes the chair aesthetically. The shell and base are not separated from the sheet but remain connected. Starting from a square surface, the felt sheet is twisted and twisted again, just like a scarf, ending in a symmetric and but also an asymmetric object, this is literally forms follows function.

Japanese designers Tatsuo Yamamoto and Jun Hashimoto have formed a creative collaboration called BOOKS. They have exhibited at Salone del Mobile in Milan , where they introduced their latest creations, the Mozzarella and Net chairs.

Designer talk...The image of this chair is mozzarella cheese—a vital ingredient to the Italian gastronom, which has unique resilience and a simple but light flavor similar to the Japanese tofu. This chair has the smooth and soft texture and the distinctive bounce just like that spoonful of fresh mozzarella cheese made from freshly squeezed buffalo milk.

An easychair created out of one sheet of industrial stainless mesh. How would the ultimate furniture evolve when created from minimum processing and material? This is the latest piece of work in this series, where the designer attempts to create an elegant and comfortable chair out of industrial material and fairly simple techniques. This chair is created by cutting and folding a sheet of industrial stainless mesh and tying it with a fine wire. Other products of this evolution include the Thin Chair and Web Chair.

Swedish designer Johan Lindstén introduces the Oak Concept collection that he has exhibited as part of the Designersblock event during the Salone del Mobile show in Milan.

'The Oak Concept took off from a series question I asked myself. Like, why does it not exist any good-looking lamps in wood (according to me)? Is it possible to produce lamps in wood? What is my interpretation of an honest modern high quality chair in wood?

The answers led to:. A cocky modern wooden chair with the stroking blessing of a craftsman. The poor floor lamp in oak who continuously fighting against the gravity of the moon, and the thinnest led lamp in oak ever made.'

The nordic types always seem to hit the mark with simple stylish furniture...must be the weather keeping them in studying, or the price of beer?

'This piece was inspired by a client I met at The Celebration Of Craftsmanship & Design Exhibition ( at Cheltenham ) who had a passion for 1950’s furniture. He wanted a desk with a distinct ‘Toby Howes’ look that combined a light, suspended-in-air feel with the utilitarianism of the time. What I came up with contrasts light and dark, straight lines and curves, intricate construction with simple style and luxurious materials with sparse design. I love the dichotomy of this piece!

If this is simple style I can't wait to see one of his complicated pieces, typical Cheltenham look perhaps , what do you think??

Danish-Japanese design duo, Inoda + Sveje have designed 'Crys' a custom made, modular table produced by italian company De Stalis. The design includes 'plugs' for various functions, accommodating electrical cords, recessed flower vases, generic fittings for lamps etc. the table top is made from natural treated oak or reinforced plywood laminate, while the legs are made from solid natural treated oak. it comes in round, square or rectangular shaped options.

Not a bad looking table from this duo , but the features are not very apparrent from the pictures alone, maybe you have to study it in real life to get a better idea?

Italian designer Giorgio Biscaro will exhibit during the upcoming Milan Design Week at Salone Satellite, the showcase for young designers from all around the world. This year, the collection counts almost twenty new products, and includes light fixtures, furniture, kitchenware and more. The item previewed here is Offset Stool. It’s the result of a deep research into bent plywood, its possibilities in furniture, and manufacturing process optimization.

Description from designer Giorgio Biscaro:

Offset stool is obtained through the repetition of some plywood strips bent at the same angle, manufactured by the producer by bending a long, single sheet of plywood and then cutting it into pieces. These pieces are drilled and paired to three pantograph cut legs through three couples of little iron bars to avoid glueing and provide extra stiffness. At this stage, the stool is a compact body, but its resulting shape is still quite uneven, because all the bent stripes are the same length, and this make the seat kinda “rough”. To obtain a smooth profile, the stool is milled with the help of a guide and no other processes are needed.

The trilobated shape of the seat is unusual, but it’s more comfortable, regardless of people’s different heights: since it mimics a bottom’s print, legs can immediately reach the floor and they are not pressed to the edge of a wider seat.

This construction method allows to minimize scraps, and quickens the production, since all strips are worked at the same time. Moreover, if the plywood seat has some flaws, you can throw it away without discarding a big piece of wood. Plywood is really little expensive, and this, combined with the easiness of production method (single radius bent, waste reduction and one-gesture mill) sets price really really low. Even packaging is light and minimal, since the disassembled stool can fit into a 43×21x8cm box, providing great storage. The main body is painted but the top of the seat remains natural, to show how it’s made. Giorgio Biscaro will exhibit Offset stool and many other products at Salone Satellite, B14 booth, during the Design Week, 13-19th April.

From the designer..Nina Bruun....says it all really...

'Influenced by the coming season and of nature, this chair is inspired by a bird’s nest. My idea was to create a graphical chaos which still felt like a unified whole.

The chair’s supporting structure consists of a bottom, seat and four stabilizing legs. To create a “nest feeling” I played with birch strips in different thicknesses and hurled them around the supporting structure. In order not to divert attention from the nest of birch strips, I have chosen to make a very anonymous upholstered cushion in a dusty chocolate brown which plays beautifully with the pale birch. It was natural for me that the chair had a soft center to create references to the bird’s nest, that are typically lined with down, to form a confident frame for eggs and chicks. It was very difficult to get the nest “right” I had to do the chair over and over again before it was perfect.'

Dutch designer Wieke Somers has developed 'grasshopper', a collection of two tables and two chairs constructed from powder coated aluminium and steel. references to the grasshopper can be found in the legs of the furniture pieces.

'The Invisibles' is the result of the latest collaboration between japanese designer Tokujin Yoshioka and Kartell's president, Claudio Luti. the series comes ten years after the 'invention' of transparency, in which Kartell expresses a new stylistic approach to 'invisible furniture'.'the Invisibles' will be on show during Milan design week 2010 at the Kartell flagstore.

'the invisibles' is a range of furniture: tables, sofas, armchairs and benches Yoshioka has designed for Kartell where the play of the evanescence of transparency is all-encompassing. The pieces share a lightness, complete in transparency, but still have a feeling of solidness - the maxi forms exhibiting a thickness which has never been seen in polycarbonate design pieces previously. the series is a continuation of yoshioka's exploration of the ethereal, combined with Kartell's desire to invest in its own technological 'know-how' in order to give life to new forms.

Please no studded jeans when you sit on my new chair.... these can be seen, or maybe not! at an exhibition near you soon...

This LEGO boardroom table by abgc Architects has been created for a recently-formed advertising agency, Boys and Girls, who commissioned abgc to create a comfortable, modern space in a Georgian building. The proposal also included a 4′x9′ boardroom table design made entirely of LEGO bricks, complete with the company’s logo embedded into the tabletop.

The table consists of 22,742 pieces clicked together with traditional LEGO construction techniques (no glue), a 136-mm grommet is located in its center. It sits on a polished stainless steel square hollow section structure built by B.A. Engineering of Prussia St and is topped with a 10-mm sheet of toughened glass manufactured by Action Glass.

The idea of generating tables of different heights through the repetition of a single building block is what informs Layer, a table composed of a glass tabletop supported by a base made by stacking a variable number of wooden rings which repropose the structure of a pals trunk. The use of the rings is what allows the table’s height and dimensions to be varied, depending on whether one or two columns are employed and how many rings are stacked to create them.

The Italian manufacturer Cappellini recently unveiled the new stool ‘Alodia’ by the New York based designer Todd Bracher. The minimalist cantilever is made from metal tube and steel plate, seat cut by laser and black plastic feet. It comes in two heigths in matt varnished in white, anthracite, mustard, green and avio blue colours.

'Alle', a new chair design by Luca Nichetto for Skitsch will be presented during the Milan design week 2010. the preview will take place during the opening of the Skitsch brompton road shop in london on march 25.

Created to serve many uses, 'Alle' is a revisitation of the tubular chair, but with a structural twist. the chair consists of a tubular metal structure into which a curved plywood seat is fitted. it comes in two versions, a classic four-legged one and another with a four-footed columnar base. The paint on the edges of the seat are gradated, using the same color as the frame. this gives the chairs an appearance of wear reminiscent of wooden chairs in cafés or bars.

I guess the trick is to make the paint design feature look part of the design rather than just being badly sprayed?....

KONNEX is a basic cube set, which can be assembled to create a shelf unit. Additionally, different basic sets can be added to create a unique piece of storage furniture. For this, the different slits around one cube can be slid into the side walls of another. The concept of the basic set allows the modules to be moved and be stored easily occupying hardly any space.

Stacks of good stool designs at Milan..especially this one

Apis is a stackable, three-legged stool designed by Alessandro Loschiavo, which will be shown in Milan from the 8th of April to the 16th of June 2010 at WhiteLabs (Via Tiraboschi 2, Milano).

Inspired by the world of bugs and their sophisticated morphologic synthesis, Apis is made entirely in recyclable aluminium, it is particularly light and easy to carry, though with no abandonment of a solid and stable structure. The triangular plate seat, bent down at the apex and base of the triangle, rests on a tube frame via small rubber dampers and allows one to sit freely on the two opposite sides. The stacking is ensured by rotating each stool a few degrees over the one below. Supplied in the two finishes of anodized aluminium or shiny black, it can also be ordered with the two-tone version of the seat that emphasizes the dynamic image typical of some insects.

Japanese furniture company Maruni Wood Industry has added new pieces to their Hiroshima series for their 2010 collection.one of the new pieces is the 'hiroshima chair', a small chair which follows the same look as the 'hiroshima arm chair'. the design keeps in mind the texture of the wood used to finish the legs,back frame and top rail of the seat which look as if they are seamlessly one piece. the thin upholstered seat can be removed for easy maintenance.

From tabletop to laptop...Sony fusion coffee table

In this fast moving society, multi-tasking is a valuable trait, which applies to both people and objects. Fusing technology and furniture into a single object, Singapore-based designer Zyane Tan has come up with a multifunctional unit called “Sony Fusion” that apart from being used as a regular coffee table becomes a high performance desktop for the geeks. The Sony Fusion is a simple coffee table with clean structured lines, made of matte black aluminum with a sleek chrome lining, supported by arched chrome legs. At the push of the power button, the table top splits in half and elegantly slides apart to reveal a trendy touch-sensitive keyboard outlined by LED lights. The adjustable screen can be angled in different directions to allow an ideal work position to the users, while the slot-loaded DVD drive and headphone jack can be found on the sides of the table. Available in blue, white and red, the Sony Fusion when it comes into production would cost about $3000.

On march 4th, a new body of work by Dutch designer Joris Laarman will be unveiled at Friedman Benda, nyc - his first U.S. solo exhibition. Laarman's aesthetic merges cutting edge technology and the life-sciences to create work of unexpected beauty. in 2008, Laarman's bone chair and bone chaise, his first two works since graduating from eindhoven,were displayed in MoMA's exhibition design and the elastic mind. this marked a major milestone in his career and the chair subsequently, was added to the museum's permanent collection.

In 2006, laarman's bone chair revolutionized the design process by using an algorithm to translate the complexity, proportion and functionality of human bone and tree growth into a chair form. the algorithm, originally used by the german car industry, enabled him to reduce and strengthen his designs by optimizing material allocation, weight and stability, while minimizing material input. In his own words, he sculpted 'using mother nature's underlying codes.'

'Particle' by UK designer Bethan Laura Wood is a range of furniture designed during her residency at the Design museum in london. influenced by the museum's location at butlers wharf overlooking the river thames, wood investigated the historical usage of the building and the site. she discovered that it had been a banana warehouse when the port of london was the main site for importing and exporting all manner of goods to the UK from around the world.

In response, she has developed a furniture system based on the visual aesthetic of crates and packaging materials. this range of interlocking and stacking units has been designed to fit in with the museum's café area, the different combinations of units allowing for flexibility of space. wood's aim with 'particle' is to celebrate the intrinsic qualities of lowly, industrial materials, encouraging the user to look at the quality of these materials in a new light.

She has re-appropriated the wood laminates to create a new pattern inspired by particleboard, a material that is often considered low quality and mundane, transforming it into an original surface pattern. her aim is to encourage the user to reconsider the beauty of materials often consigned to temporary or low-cost construction solutions. the pattern has been developed to facilitate the use of various sized off-cuts and samples. the laminate is laser-cut into shapes and interwoven, much like a patchwork.

77 year old Swedish designer Ake Axelsson exhibited 'wood' - an elegant lightweight chair he produced for Gärsnäs - at the stockholm furniture fair 2010. The components are made with a traditional steaming technique that uses a minimal amount of wood.

New form of Ninja found in the forest...take a look........

The design studio Swedish Ninja have created a series of furniture that is constructed using Oriented Strand Board structural beams.

The series is called “Forest in new form,” and was created through the desire to design functional and creative furniture using an unexpected material

“I always liked the raw material of wood OSB (Oriented Strand Board)” said Maria Gustavsson industrial designer and founder of Swedish Ninja. “I became very interested when I heard about the new three-dimensional strand profile, developed by cleantech company Newbeam. I instantly fell in love with the girder structure and was inspired by the challenge of creating beautiful furniture out of this new, orthogonal standard.”

The inspiration for the furniture’s form was Tetris, the classic video game from the ‘90s. The result is a cast of strong characters who relay a cubic personality. They have strong will, are firmly planted on the ground, and support their users. The likely attraction to these little ninjas in undeniable. The question is, will you be able to choose a favorite?

“Forest in new form” is made of the eco-friendly material Oriented Strand Board. The OSB production process consumes 30% less energy than commonly used by a sawmill to produce the equivalent amount of structural components of the same size. The material is made up of three standard discs of planed wood, glued together. In addition to its eco-friendliness, OSB has many technical advantages. Long wood chips are randomly distributed and compressed under high pressure to yield a higher fiber density than in wood – OSB is stronger! By shaping OSB-material into a three dimensional beam form, Newbeam has managed to create a new profile for structural products.

Stick to fighting is my advice.........interesting use of new material but lacking in elegance?...

Italian designer Luca Nichetto has created the Robo Chair for the Swedish manufacturer OFFECCT

From the designers;

The concept of dismantlement provided the spark for Robo’s design, which found inspiration in the Icelandic singer Björk’s 1999 video for the song “All Is Full of Love” directed by Chris Cunningham in which the main protagonists are robots that take on human characteristics.

“I find the idea that a robot could become a living being really exciting, and so I imagined what would happen if the same principle were applied to the design of a chair. The goal was to create an object that respected the environment by playing with a design comprised of separate pieces so that the chair could be transported in a small box. My vision became reality when I translated the forms of a ‘humanized’ robot into a chair, placing particular emphasis on the shapes of the robot’s ‘limbs’. The project couldn’t have been called anything other than Robo” (Luca Nichetto).

Thanks to a structure comprised of separate parts that are assembled to create the whole – the seat, the seat back, and the legs – Robo is a truly unique chair whose easy assembly can be compared to that of a Meccano set. When shipped, the disassembled components of the chair fit in a box measuring only 50 x 50 x 20cm, a fact which reflects OFFECCT’s principles, for the company has always had a strong interest in environmentally friendly design. Even the choice of materials, from the plywood and acrylic felt made of recycled plastic bottles to the glue, further underscores the company’s desire to respect the environment.

French designer Patrick Norguet has created the Fly Chair for the Swedish manufacturer OFFECCT

In launching the Fly chair, OFFECCT has drawn on the skills of one of France’s most interesting designers. Patrick Norguet worked on the project for four years before he and the design team at OFFECCT found the right technology to produce the chair.

“It is really not a complicated design,” he says. “What was difficult was to find a manufacturer who could make the technical textile with the minimum possible environmental impact.”

A first glance at Fly makes one think of the Far East, and Norguet compares the shape of the chair to the helmet worn by Japanese samurai. Fly has an organic design language in which the fabric itself creates much of the shape by being stretched over the metal frame.

Because very little energy is used to make the fabric, Fly meets OFFECCT’s high demands for sustainable production. The company maintains a continual dialogue with both its suppliers and manufacturers about how best to produce environmentally friendly products.

A liddle hand woven delight drawn from the stable of Cohda design

These hand woven chairs are all created by Richard Liddle’s hands in a one off blue colour produced in the UK from recycled domestic plastic waste, the unique chairs explore the latest of British company, Cohda's, research into the tooling process and technical experimentation of recycled plastics in design.

Liddle's chairs are hand woven in 100% recycled domestic plastic waste. Gallery Plusdesign exhibited the chairs at Object Rotterdam 2010. Liddle spent two years at London's Royal College of Art studying the problem and developing a solution - a process that melds plastic recycling and manufacturing into a single, seamless process.

Liddle's company 'Cohda design' refined its process of efficiently converting waste materials into new products. the studio is equipped with the modified industrial machines that can take bottles made of HDPE - a plastic used in the construction, housewares, automotiveand packaging industries - grind them into flakes, melt them, and form that molten plastic into chairs, lamps, and other products using a process he calls 'uncooled recycled extrude' or 'URE'.

Entries are being sought for the 2010 Northern Design Competition, which is open to students at universities, colleges and sixth forms across the North of England.

The deadline for entries to the competition, which is run by Leeds Metropolitan University, is 23 April. Entries are being sought for categories including graphic design, illustration, interactive media, photography and product design.

Five shortlisted finalists in each category will be invited to exhibit their work and attend an awards evening in June.

Prizes totalling more than £15 000 will be awarded, with prizes also going to the Young Northern Designer, selected from entries from students aged between 16 and 18, and the Maurice Miller Design Champion, selected from the eight category winners.

The Northern Design Awards is now in its fifth year, and boasts judges including Wayne Hemingway, interior designer Ab Rogers, and Thompson Brand Partners founder Ian Thompson.

he Geo coffee table by Vito Selma

If you look closely you’ll find they’re actually very still. Lines are stubborn things to pin down, so you don’t; you string them up. And while they insist on following a ‘linear’ track, it’s also very easy to fool them into bending a bit here and there in a hegemonic sort of oscillation. They’ll move only when you coax them, to form grids, blueprints, objects of the world.

My style is a play of lines, a test of the limitations of wood, and an evolution in itself. Showing the defined organic lines of the grain of wood is very important to me. The Geo cocktail table embodies this. It is inspired from string art, the arrangement of lines between points to create a geometricla pattern. By creating a more 3-D version of this art, it gives it more depth.

Depends where a viewer is standing, the look of the Geo transforms…from a DNA looking table base to a “winged” piece. It is an illusion of movement, especially when light is focused on it and shadows are casted. It is a piece that you really have to see to really understand its full concept.

This is a Green product.

This table is made of either Pine or Mahogany wood, all coming from sustainably harvested forests. Aside from this, the “wooden rods” that are used as “string” in this table is made from recycled or unwanted wooden parts of legs and arms of chairs. Coming from a manufacturing firm with strict Quality Control, we have quite a few of these waste parts. I recycled them by processing it through a dowelling machine. It gives it a whole new look and the new texture adds even more character to the piece of wood and the table as a whole.

Straight from industry into the home...cast iron table from Derek Mcleod

This side table by Derek Mcleod is made from an uncommon material for the home, cast iron. while the heavy duty material is common in the world of industry, it is rarely seen in the home outside of old radiators and cooking pans. the table measures 45cm in diameter and 35cm tall. it is cast as a single piece using molten iron and then ground down to create a flat top surface by blanchard grinding, a process which makes the top surface flat and parallel to the bottom within 0.001 inches. this process also gives the table top its unique circular pattern. the bottom of the table showcases the raw cast iron, with its uneven and dark surface.

Lose your heart this valentine to a Verner Panton classic...

Designed in 1959 by Denmark’s Verner Panton, Heart Cone Chair began as a variant of the slightly more demure Cone Chair of 1958. The metamorphosis went from the fantastical to the fanciful: Cone Chair looks like an ice cream delicacy and Heart Cone Chair like a box of chocolates.

Panton once worked as an assistant for Arne Jacobsen note Heart Cone’s nod to the sensuous Egg Chair. Although it has lovely contours, don’t oversimplify Panton’s Heart Cone Chair. It’s meant to play with lots of iconic shapes, not just the bloody organ: “Heart Cone Chair has large, projecting wings reminiscent of Mickey Mouse ears that could also, however, be interpreted as a contemporary take on the classic wing chair.” Constructed of durable materials laminated body, stainless base, polyurethane foam upholstery.

Heart Cone Chair doesn’t compromise durability for style. And given the delicious color choices, this Panton gem is easy to swallow. Of course, there’s the red, but also golden yellow, rust, and chocolate in warm tones; and blue, green, and steel in the cool range.

Japan and Taiwan-based Noiz architecture, design and planning were recently commissioned to design a cultural salon for Taiwan land corporation to enhance the corporate identity of the company. the design theme of the project was 'transformation'.along with designing the new interior the firm developed furniture for the salon, which followed with this notion of transforming. their morphing table and chairs are derived from iconic pieces of modern designed furniture. The forms morph from one typology of a chair or table into another in one continuous form.

Influenced by the inherent importance of churches as an architecture of shelter and protection during times of upheaval, industrial designer curro claret has created furniture to mark this historic contribution. churches in the past have remained open for 24 hours providing sanctuary for pilgrims, victims of war and the homeless. curro claret's latest project is a bench that is able to transform into a bed. it explores to give existent church furniture a more multifunctional use while continuing to reflect the church as a place of refuge. Curro Claret has recently presented in the galeria H20 in Barcelona.

Like many designers Nordgren and Herbertsson of RVW grew tired of the fast paced design business and decided to take matters into their own hands.

From the designers RVW website..

“Things are finding their own pace now and we are working in close contact with our suppliers. Producing something that’s more than a throwaway takes time. There are so many logos and slogans about sustainability or local production, but to communicate expression or comfort is more delicate: if someone has to tell you how to enjoy a furniture or artwork, then it is not a good piece of art,” says Jonas Nordgren.

Based in Malmö in the southern part of Sweden, RVW is working closely with suppliers in the Öresund region and Småland to produce its furniture. Besides breathing life in local artisanship, they also pay homage to Scandinavias design heritage.

“We see it as something self-explanatory to continue on the Scandinavian design heritage and to produce something specific from the library of materials, ideas and forms crafted over centuries,” says Johannes Herbertsson

RVW believes that unifying the traditional and the contemporary is the way to work – both when it comes to design and production.

“We believe that our furniture could have been drawn 100 years ago or 100 years from now, because they are not bound to a certain trend or style. Most of the materials aren’t new. It’s just new technology and your intellect that makes certain visions possible. Timeless pieces of art and furniture seem to have something in common regardless of when they were created. It’s this universal, yet elusive experience we are trying to obtain with our furniture,” says Jonas Nordgren.

Taking matters into their own hands

Before founding RVW, Jonas and Johannes were two-thirds of the critically acclaimed design group and furniture manufacturer Vujj; a company that started shortly after Jonas had been labeled one of the world’s most promising young designers in 2005 by renowned design magazine Wallpaper, and therefore courted by venture capitalists.

Launched in London 2006 and followed by shows in Milan and Stockholm, Vujj quickly gained a lot of attention from the international media and won several design awards for their work. But due to different views on core values within the company, Jonas and Johannes decided to take matters into their own hands and founded RVW in 2009.

Timeless work takes time

The duo is now producing their own furniture in an attempt to maintain the integrity of the slow art form of furniture design. Their main focus is to produce universal objects for people in general; objects without an expiration date.

Multi-talented

Besides starting up RVW, Jonas and Johannes have recently been working on several other projects together, including concept and interior design for the Malmö based fashion store Trés Bien Shop and architectural work for private villas.

The Thinker Tables were commissioned by the Chinese Gallery, Chapter 7 and formed part of a large solo exhibition of Tom's works that were on show in Hangzhou, China from September to December 2009.

They are made using black and grey polyproylene tubes that have been fused together, and then melted at one end to create a flat tabletop.

The tubes are arranged in such a way that when viewed from a distance, they form 3 dimensional pixels of a 2 dimensional image. In this case the faces of Greek philosopher, Socrates, and the Chinese philosopher, Confusucius. A convex mirror (which was placed on the gallery wall) enables the viewer to see the tables in a way that reveals the images on the table. Seen this way the images become almost photographic.

Tom Price was born in London and continues to live and work in the capital. His background in Fine Art informs his approach to design, which is often very sculptural in both appearance and concept.

Tom studied under Ron Arad and Jurgen Bey at the Royal College of Art from where he graduated with a Masters degree in 2007.

Recent projects include design and architectural commissions and limited edition sculptural furniture. His work has been bought by galleries and private collectors throughout the world, and are included in permanent collections of museums such as the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMoMA), and the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe in Hamburg, Germany.

This chair is a modern interpretation of the traditional Windsor chair. Like the original, it is made using classic three wood construction. Although the form has been streamlined and paired down in a nod to minimalism, the chair retains the solid charm of its ancestor. Custom colors are available for projects.

Hidden Art awards revealed.........

Furniture company SCP has picked up the prize for more influential or inspiring British company or designer at this year’s Hidden Art Awards.

The award for best furniture, lighting or interior product went to Dare Studio for the Katakana writing/laptop desk (pictured). Redesign, which supports and promotes design for sustainability, picked up the award for most sustainable product/environmentally conscious company.

The award for best textiles, fashion, jewellery or fashion accessories went to Kaniez Abdi for Spiral fabric, while the award for best ceramics or glass went to Charlotte Sale Glass for Spritz.

The prize for best appearance at a trade show/exhibition went to Helena Jonasson for the Milan 2009 Linie cabinet and Funkis draw unit, while the award for most popular product on the Hidden Art Shop went to Susan Bradley for the Battersea Power Station bookend (pictured). Bradley also picked up the award for best press profile.

Kirsty Whyte was named as the most active Hidden Art member, while the Hidden Art product development award went to John Sprange and the award for most popular stand at the Hidden Art Christmas Design Fair went to Nick Fraser.

The awards were held at London’s Rich Mix.

Myrkr chair creeps out of the shadows......

American designer, Christopher Warren, has created the Myrkr chair for a gallery exhibition in which a reading area of various chairs and tables was needed to examine artists’ books.

Description from Christopher Warren:

'Old Norse for “darkness”, Myrkr is conceived of light and shadow. Its design answers the modern call for material efficiency and the utilization of technology; however, the common contemporary desires for thinness and gloss have been replaced by volume and subtlety.

“Find beauty not only in the thing itself but in the pattern of the shadows, the light and dark which that thing provides.” – Jun’ichir? Tanizaki, In Praise of Shadows

For Myrkr, modern fabrication techniques have been combined with traditional assembly methods. The lounge chair has no metal connections, but rather is made from a single laser-cut sheet of 12mm plywood and 144 dowels. It has been dipped in black aniline dye and finished with lacquer. Myrkr is light, very comfortable, and surprisingly stable.'

Description from the designer:

Loops was designed to fill a void in today’s market – knock down furniture that appears to be a one-off piece of art. Inspired by bungee jumping, Loops was ergonomically tested to provide form and function with an aesthetic made from 2/8 rubber cordstock, 1/2 in PETG plastic and maple wood. The piece was created to fit inside a UPS shipping box.

Italian designer Alessandro Andreucci and German designer Christian Hoisl, have created the Cantilever collection for the Italian outdoor furniture manufacturer EMU.

The Cantilever series springs from the idea of a chair made entirely in steel with a cantilever structure, combining the company’s manufacturing tradition with its vocation toward experimental design. The result is an extremely comfortable chair, which gives an oscillating effect, almost as if gently rocking whoever sits in it. The lightness and transparency of the structure led to the developing of a complete line: chairs, in the armchair and low armchair versions, a large rectangular table and a lounger. The chairs are completed with cushions in the new Emu outdoor fabrics (solid color and stripes) providing the greatest comfort in use and a pleasing aesthetic detail.

Seen on Contemporist....The Janus Chairs by Ryder Architecture

Ryder Architecture designed the Janus Chairs that have been installed at Kielder Water & Forest Park in Northumberland in North East England.

Janus Chairs was created as one of six sculptural shelters at Kielder Water & Forest Park, northern Europe’s largest man made lake and England’s largest forest.

The three one piece chairs (H2.3mxW1.2mxL2.3m, H2.7mxW1.8mxL3.1m, H3.3mx W2.4mxL3.8m) can be rotated toward a favourite view, into the sun, away from the wind or toward each other to form a family group.

They are made from laminated Douglas fir from the Scottish borders with polished stainless steel backs. Facing inward they are the closed bud of a flower, rotated outward they come into full bloom.

On approach, and when seen from other positions around the lake, they are one sculpture, their different but related forms providing a constantly changing composition depending on their relative positioning.
